Most Tundra owners will never have to do this, but for those of us who have
gone to a solid axle setup will- packing those wheel bearings. Its a
greasy job, but here is a product that will make your life much easier and less
greasy- The Handy PackerTM!!
The kit consists of the outer housing, a
vented plunger, a piston handle, and a cap for storage (you need to supply
you own bearings!!)
The 1st step is to load the housing with your
favorite grease. I usually opt for a synthetic product like Mobil1
or as I have here Redline bearing grease
Next, insert the plunger with the O-ring side
down, insert the piston handle and push down until the grease starts to
spew out from the vents. Depending on the viscosity of the grease
you are using, you may have to push hard.
Next, remove the piston handle, place your
bearings with the tapered side down and put the handle back on.
Now push down until you see the grease spew
out from the top of the bearing.
If you are repacking a bearing keep pushing until you see fresh grease
coming up
Remove the handle and you're almost
done. How easy was that?
You still have a little bit of work to
do. Removing the packed bearings is the messiest part. You
will get a lot of grease sticking to the inner race. I use this to
prep the outside edge of the bearings and the grease up the spindle.
If you are repacking a bearing you can easily wipe off the old grease
and not contaminate the fresh grease with the old stuff.
These run around $25, but sometimes they are on sale at the Tool
Warehouse for about $15.
One thing that I did not like was the fact that when you change out the
grease, cleaning the housing is still messy. Brake cleaner fluid should be
avoided to remove any residual grease as it reacts with the plastic and may
cause it to crack with repeated exposure over time. Aside from this it is
a great addition to the tool box!!!
